I became a Teacher Trainer at the end of Covid for RED Driving School and have since then, decided to go independent continuing on to teach people how to become Driving Instructors. Post Pandemic, the need for driving instructors has sky rocketed, I’m very passionate about learning and making sure it’s done correctly.

I’m using 1st 4 Driver Training online package and there are also additional online support available to you from Dave Foster who founded the company.

Part 1 - Theory Test

  • You will get access to online Theory Test Pro.

  • 100 Multiple Choice Questions, pass mark is 80-100 but you must score 20 out of 25 for each of the 4 sections.

  • 14 Hazard perception Video Clips - pass mark is 57 out of 75.

Part 2 - Driving Ability

You are to demonstrate technique, control & observations in your drive.

Driving test is 1 hour long and you are allowed no more than 6 faults.

10 hours needed for this.

Part 3 - Teaching ability

An examiner will sit in the back watching you carry out a real lesson with an existing student.

This part is 40 hours with in-car training and online (Mandatory).

Option (Recommended) - 20hrs Additional Validation Training

Once you have completed 40hours of training, you have the option to go on a Pink Training License, you will be known as a PDI (Potential Driving Instructor), here you can earn while you learn, preparing you for your final exam and practising all your training whilst teaching live students, I’ve seen many trainee instructors use this and enable their students to pass their driving test before they have even qualified themselves.

After this you will qualify as an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) and will then be on the Government Approved Driving (ADI) register.
